W.5. Jason Ward: PORTRAIT DRAWING (intermediate to advanced)
Working directly from observation we will focus on finding gesture, symmetry and balance, weight, and an understanding of how the figure carries itself and moves. CThe class will start with a demonstration of materials, then move into a series of quick drawings to study the anatomy of the face.
On the first day, we will focus on the anatomy of the face and skull and how to compose a portrait. We will also go over tips on how to light a model for portrait study. The second day will focus on how to make a generalized portrait much more specific. We will focus on the observation of specific features to create a likeness, as well as how to choose a certain element of the pose to emphasize to give the portrait a greater sense of focus.
